COMPARE TO DISNEY™ (AKA F@#K MICKEY MOUSE)
August 13 2009

F@#K MICKEY MOUSE screens at MADCAP Theaters in the Bookmans Theater (730 S. Mill Ave, Tempe, AZ 85281, Ph: 480-634-5192) in 16mm on Saturday September 5th at 5, 7 & 9pm. Tickets are $10 (SEE STORE PAGE FOR DETAILS)

Globe-trotting film scholar Dennis Nyback has assembled this hilarious, enlightening and sometimes shocking 16mm film program. Nyback's scandalously entertaining program reveals a world that is funny, bold, and completely out of control. A world that isn't afraid to turn Little Red Riding Hood into Red, a hot dancer, or Snow White into Coal Black, a maid in 1940s Harlem. It also includes perhaps the most daunting example of Disney's God-Bless-America approach to animation, Der Fuehrer's Face (1943), in which Donald Duck dreams that he's a Nazi!

Dennis Nyback creates film programs from his private collection of thousands of early animation and jazz films, Soundies, Scopitones, educationals industrials, commercials, newsreels, silent films, vintage television shows, home movies and rare, forgotten, forbidden, and amazing short films. He also founded the Pike Street Cinema in Seattle and the Lighthouse Cinema in NYC. Dennis has toured Europe and the U.S. screening his programs at film festivals, theaters, and universities for over 25 years.

The F@#K MICKEY MOUSE program includes the following shorts (subject to curator's choice):

BOSKO IN PERSON (1933)
The first effort by Warner Brothers to rip off Mickey Mouse.

ONE MORE TIME (1931)
Warners second attempt at their own Mickey Mouse, this time he's a character called Foxy.

SNOW WHITE (1933)
Max Fleischer’s version done several years before Disney’s. This featured Betty Boop and the voice of Cab Calloway.

JOHNNY SMITH AND POKER-HUNTAS (1938)
Long before Disney's Pocahontas, Tex Avery did this version.

PORKY IN WACKYLAND (1938)
Disney had a flop in 1951 with Alice In Wonderland. This earlier version by Bob Clampett is much better.

YOU OUGHT TO BE IN PICTURES(1940)
Fritz Freleng combines live action and animation fifty years before Disney’s Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

A CORNY CONCERTO (1943)
Warner Brother's wonderful parody of Fantasia. Written by Frank Tashlin, directed by Bob Clampett.

RED HOT RIDING HOOD (1943)
Tex Avery makes fun of Disney’s approach to fairy tales with an adult version.

COAL BLACK AND DE SEBBEN DWARVES (1943)
The best parody of Disney ever made. One of the eleven Warner cartoons which were banned in 1968.

DER FUEHRER'S FACE (1943)
The Disney cartoon which won the Academy Award in 1943 and then was suppressed by the Disney company for the next sixty years.
